How do you check the transmission fluid on a Harley Ultra Classic?
Straddle your Harley and hold it level, off the side stand, for 20 to 30 seconds. Remove the transmission dipstick and wipe it clean before reinserting it into the block. Do not screw it in. Insert the dipstick until the top of the threads is resting on top of the hole to check the transmission fluid in a Harley.
What if your transmission fluid is brown?
If your transmission fluid is deep red or brown, your transmission fluid is old and most likely causing extra damage within your transmission. If it is dark brown, that is a sign you have burnt transmission fluid from overheating. You should also check for any particles within your transmission fluid.

When did Fordomatic 2spd Trans fluid come out?
The older Fordomatics, (pre 1958) called for Type A automatic transmission fluid. (There is also an aluminum case Fordomatic 2spd that came out in 1959. I don’t remember what trans fluid was recommended) Type A has been replaced by several different Dexrons and what is now Dexron III.
What kind of fluid does a GM Truck take?
General Motors (GM) vehicles after 1968 take Dexron ATF. Over the years, GM has updated and improved their Dexron fluid specifications. The newer versions are usually (but not always) backward compatible. This means that if you have a truck that calls for Dexron-II, you can still use the newer Dexron-V in it without problems.
