If it’s an 01 it’s almost certainly a wheel bearing. I had 3 or 4 go on me in 60,000 miles before they finally swapped in Legacy bearings. Visit Chromer’s homepage! My 2004 Forester XT has also developed a whine in the reer diff. The guy at Subaru said they’d have a look at it next service. It’s only done 14,000 miles – great car though!! If it’s a whining, moaning noise I get that too.
