Are there any problems with the Harley Davidson cam chain tensioners?
Harley, of course, made a fairly expensive upgrade including a new oil pump and hydraulic cam chain tensioners run by the engine oil and re-designed shoes. They also went to a new style chain. The new design is very reliable and as of like 2009 I haven’t heard of any problems with them.
What causes a cam sprocket to rotate on a timing chain?
The chain tensioner (2) attempts to take up the excess slack in the timing chain. When the tensioner piston extends, the chain is pulled tight. Removing this slack on one side of the chain also causes the cam sprocket (3) to rotate and change camshaft timing on that bank.
How much does it cost to replace twin cam chain tensioner?
The inspection and replacement of the inner shoe is expensive and involves removing the oil pump and cam, the outer one shoe is easier but you have to check both of them. Our dealership wanted $400 just to inspect the shoes, which they wouldn’t do because they said if they get that far into it they might as well just replace them.
Why are my tensioners not tightening my timing chain?
Problems begin when improper viscosity oil and substandard oil filters are used. With a substandard oil filter the engine oil may drain back to the oil pan when the engine is turned off. A lack of oil pressure means tensioners cannot immediately tighten the timing chains on startup.

Why did my cam chain tensioner fail on my Electra Glide?
It was the cam chain tensioners! Broken up at 28k miles on my Electra Glide. The manual is woefully negligent on this subject. I would advise ’06 & earlier check at 25k. Newer hydraulic aren’t much better in material used for the “shoe” but can leave inspect up to 45k miles. As an aside, the particles clog the support plate.
Can a roller chain tensioner last 10, 000 miles?
I did my roller chain conversion last fall and now have 10,000 mile on them with no problems. I used the Andrews 26 N cams, Harley B lifters and factory new style oil pump and cam support plate along with the S/E adj push rods. I think they are going to take over the gear drive market because of crank runout problems.
How many miles on twin cam tensioner pads?
Our test bike was a 2001 Dyna with 13,000 miles on the original OEM cam chain tensioners. We ran another 13,000 miles on our tensioner pads to duplicate the miles and conditions. The bike was ran on a full chassis dyno.

How many miles does a cam chain tensioner take?
It has about 28,000 miles on it. I’m a new users of this forum, so I hope I am posting this correctly. Unusual noise from the cam side of the bike or orange flecks of plastic in the oil or filter would be a good indicator. No substitute for visually checking them. I definately had the same question in my mind…. Thank you…
Do you consider 36, 000 miles a lot for this cam chain tensioner system?
Do you consider 36,000 miles a lot for this chain tensioner system? 36,000 is not a lot of miles for hydraulic cam chain tensioners. You should not be concerned about inspecting them until somewhere between 80 and 100k. If you ever have your exhaust off before then, pull your cam cover and get a look at them. Just for piece of mind.
