I always use my 3/8″ Snap On torque wrench to tighten the plug. Also a new gasket. The aluminum gasket can be reused but they are only about $1.50 a piece.

One of the many problems I saw in power generation was the failure of maintenance mechanics to torque ANSI raised face flange studs to insure that the spiralwound gasket was crushed to published specs.
