Why are my intermittent wipers not working on my 240SX?

General discussion forum about the 240sx, and a great place to introduce yourself to the board! For the past few years, my intermittent wipers have not worked at all. The two other speeds, fast and extremely fast, work perfectly though.

What happens when you turn the wipers on to slow speed?

When you turn the wipers on to slow speed, the dash switches own ign live supply is then connected to the low speed input on the motor, and simultaneously, the park return feed from the motor to the dash switch is disconnected. (I’d forgotten how difficult this was to describe!)

How does the intermittent wiper relay system work?

This operation is completed thanks to the intermittent wiper relay; an electrical switch that sends a predetermined setting to the wiper module to power the wiper motor. When all of the components involved in the windshield wiper blades work correctly, the system is very convenient.

Where does power go when you turn off the wipers?

So, when you turn off the wipers, there is power fed directly to the motor still, this returns to the dash switch via the park output at the motor, where it’s routed internally in the dash switch to the slow speed output.

This operation is completed thanks to the intermittent wiper relay; an electrical switch that sends a predetermined setting to the wiper module to power the wiper motor. When all of the components involved in the windshield wiper blades work correctly, the system is very convenient.

Why is my wiper blade motor not working?

Similar to the issue above, if you notice that your wiper blades are operating at a different speed or intermittent setting than you selected, it’s a good indication that the relay is damaged and needs to be replaced. This is also a symptom that you don’t want to avoid as it may cause the wiper blade motor to overheat and break prematurely.

What happens when a windshield wiper relay goes bad?

When the relay is faulty, the windshield wipers will only work at the same speed that the last relay signal was sent. In layman’s terms, if you had your windshield wipers on the slow speed the last time they were active, and you turn them on again under a different setting, the relay switch should send that updated information to the module.

When do windshield wiper blades only work one speed?

The windshield wiper blades have one speed. One of the quickest indicators that a problem exists with the intermittent wiper relay is when the wipers are not intermittent and only work at one speed.
