Instead of making just “over the top” broken amp-like sound, the pedal retains some tightness and bottom-end in the tone. As compared to some other fuzz pedals from the late 1960s, the Big Muff didn’t have germanium but rather silicon transistors. The only exception is the Germanium 4, released in more recent times.

2N5088 or 2N5089 Silicon transistors are the closest modern production equivalents to the FS36999/2N5133 transistors used the the early 1970s Big Muffs. 2N5089 have a slightly higher gain than 2N5088. BC549C, BC550, BC239, SE4010, and 2N5210 are some others that also work in the circuit.
