How long does a coolant radiator last?
eight to 10 years
At the least, a properly maintained radiator should last up to eight to 10 years. However, there are some circumstances where you may need to replace the radiator sooner than that to keep your car running safely. If parts of the cooling system are damaged and not repaired, the radiator itself may become damaged.
Is it OK to change the coolant in a radiator?
Adding fresh radiator coolant with the proper 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water protects your radiator from overheating in summer and freezing in winter. Fortunately, flushing your vehicle’s radiator and changing the coolant is a snap.
What kind of coolant do you put in a radiator?
Using pre-diluted coolant, as opposed to concentrated or full-strength, is an easy, no-fuss way to ensure your radiator has the proper 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Run the engine until the cooling system stops bubbling and the coolant level starts to rise, then put the radiator cap back on the system.
Can a faulty radiator cap cause coolant to overflow?
A faulty radiator cap can cause the coolant reservoir to overflow and overheating the vehicle’s engine system. If the radiator hoses are always transporting hot fluid, then the hoses will wear out and will finally tear.
Where is the coolant reservoir on a radiator?
Prevent burns by never opening a warm to the touch cooling system. Open the radiator fill cap, usually on top of the radiator. If your vehicle has a plastic tank or reservoir for coolant, open that cap too.

What should I put in my radiator after a coolant leak?
Once the repair has been made, add a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze/water to the radiator until it’s full. Start the engine, and let it idle until the the thermostat opens and you see a drop in the coolant level. While the engine is still idling, add coolant to the radiator until it’s full and shut the engine off and install the radiator cap.
What to look for when replacing a radiator?
Check the heat gauge and dashboard lights while the car idles for at least 10 to 20 minutes. Also look out for leaks. Re-check the coolant level in the reservoir (overflow) tank after the job is completed and the system has completely cooled off. Also re-check the automatic transmission fluid and engine oil levels.
Is it safe to flush and fill a radiator?
Unless the coolant was recently replaced, we highly recommend performing a flush and fill. The old, drained coolant can become contaminated with debris or transmission fluid during the process of replacing the radiator, and its a safe bet to just flush and install new coolant. Use distilled water for mixing and adding to the cooling system.
