How can you tell if an engine is running too hot or too cool?

To really know if an engine is, or is not, running too hot, or too cool, is to use an accurate thermometer. How smoothly an emgine runs can INDICATE (but, not prove) that it is (or, not) running at the correct temperature. The normal operating temperature of the coolant in an engine is about 210F to 240F degrees.

What should the temp of an engine be?

As per the previous post, normally your gauge has no numbers, they just confuse drivers, but an operating range; and if the gauge is about halfway up that’s your normal operating temperature. Any major deviation from that is cause for concern and should be investigated.

Why are motors not designed to run at maximum temperature?

Of course, motors are not designed to run at the maximum allowable temperature, because that would drastically decrease motor life. In fact, every 10 C rise in operating temperature reduces insulation life by half.

What does it mean when your car is running cooler than normal?

Hi, thanks for writing in. If the engine is running cooler than normal, this could mean the thermostat is stuck in the open position. This will cause the engine to run cold and not warm up properly. This can cause the engine to use more fuel and the heater to not perform as needed in the cold times.

What should the normal operating temperature be on a Harley?

& filed under Harley Tips. Hello, hope all is well with you. I have a simple two part question for you. What is the normal operating temperature (engine) on a 2007 road king classic with a 96 cubic inch motor.. and what kind of temperature readings should I expect to get on the head pipe between jug and O2 sensors?

What should the engine operating temp be on a Polaris?

Not sure I would call them temp issues the thermostat is a 195 deg. and being its fuel injected that is the optimal temp for operation. they run just a little rich from the factory so running them cooler would make for poor fuel burn less power and so on :frown2: Just saying!
