What fabric does Gore-Tex use?
PTFE
Invented in 1969, Gore-Tex can repel liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through and is designed to be a lightweight, waterproof fabric for all-weather use. It is composed of stretched polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is more commonly known by the generic trademark Teflon.
Is Gore-Tex the best material?
GORE produces some of the most well-known waterproof materials. Their range includes fabrics such as GORE-TEX Pro, which gives waterproof and breathable protection in the harshest conditions, and GORE-TEX Active, which provides highly breathable and waterproof performance perfect for those moving fast and light.
How is Gore-Tex fabric made?
Gore-Tex is, at its most basic level, a membrane that stops liquid water but allows vapor to pass through. The membrane itself made from an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene fiber (also known as Teflon). The stretching of this polymer forms a microporous material with over 9 million pores per square inch.

GORE-TEX is made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (or ePTFE for short – phew!), which was created by Bob Gore in 1969 when he rapidly stretched PTFE under certain conditions.
Is Gore-Tex fabric sustainable?
All manufacturing sites of Gore’s Fabrics Division have implemented the bluesign® system, which verifies that GORE-TEX products are made responsibly. Environmental Management Systems are also implemented in all Fabrics’ plants.
Is GORE-TEX really worth it?
The end result is that Gore-Tex is absolutely worth it for keeping you dry, being the best performer in that test. It’s not the most breathable material, though, with the budget-minded Scott taking that honor. The best all-rounder is Dainese….I’M MELTING…
