12 April 811 – 29 November 835) was the ninth of the Twelve Imams after his father Ali al-Ridha and before his son Ali al-Hadi. He was known as al-Jawād (“the generous”) and al-Taqī (“the pious”), but also called Abu Jaʿfar al-Ṯāni (“the second Ab-Ja’far”), and Ibn al-Ridha (“the son of al-Ridha”).
