What does a lighting coil do?
The lighting coil is nothing but a long piece of copper wire wrapped around an iron core. Due to a varying magnetic field through the core the copper wire will generate electricity. That variation in the magnetic field is generated by a flywheel with magnets on the inside, which rotates around the lighting coil.
Does the stator power the coil?
The stator coil generates the power for the spark plug and other accessories on small engines Without a stator there would be no spark at all, meaning the engine won’t run.
Does a stator put out AC or DC?
The stator is the coil of wire housed inside the engine case. A magnet on a shaft spins within the stator, creating alternating current (AC). That current travels along fairly heavy gauge wire through the case and into the rectifier/regulator which converts it to DC power, and at a consistent output.
What is a lighting contactor?
Lighting contactors are relay switches that control the flow of electricity through a circuit powering the lighting in a given area. A lighting contactor switch operates at a lower but safer load and controls the high voltage/current circuit using an electromagnet. Turn the power off for the entire system.
What is a lighting coil on a Yamaha outboard?
Typically a lighting coil is used exactly for that (lighting). It usually is an a/c voltage output somewhere around 13-18volts. The frequency and voltage of this output will vary with engine speed. You can put a regulator rectifier on this output and use it to power small accessories or charge the battery.
Why use a contactor instead of a switch?
Contactors are used for high power applications. They allow a lower voltage and current to switch a much higher power circuit, so they are generally larger and more heavy-duty than control relays, enabling them to switch higher power loads on and off for many thousands of cycles (Figure 1).
Can you use a motor contactor for lighting?
Usually its a problem to use a lighting contactor on a motor. You should be good! Some manufacturers make a generic contactor with an overload section as an option. I would suspect that either the original termination was improper or possibly the contactor section of the starter is undersized.
What are the stator coils on a bike?
The stator is the set of copper coils surrounding the crankshaft. The number of coils varies from bike to bike. Mine had 2. Just a warning, if you have a lighting system, it will not work if you remove the stator.
Where do you put the wire for a new stator?
The wire marked red (coming from the engine) in the diagram is going to attach directly to the contact breaker points. There should already be a wire connected to the breaker points right where we need to put the new one. You need to remove that old wire and put the wire for the new system RIGHT WHERE THE OLD ONE WAS.
Where does the capacitor go on a stator?
The only piece that has to be done according to the diagram is the wiring between the ignition coil and capacitor: The capacitor MUST be wired between the two terminals of the ignition coil. For those of you familiar with electronics, every component is arbitrarily wired in series without regard to polarity.
How does a permanent magnet stator work in a car?
A permanent magnet stator is a stationary piece of circular metal with prongs that have lengths of copper wires wrapped around them, which are then connected into either a “wye” or “delta” pattern. The coils produce electricity as magnets on the rotor, or the flywheel, move around the stator.
What happens if you don’t have a stator coil?
The stator coil generates the power for the spark plug and other accessories on small engines Without a stator there would be no spark at all, meaning the engine won’t run. While a stator is dying, it can produce a weak spark, causing the engine to miss or run poorly. Symptoms are often worsened as the engine warms up.
How does a field excited stator work on a bike?
The stator produces alternating current (AC) that flows into your machine’s rectifier to be converted to direct current (DC) and then power the DC loads on your bike. Field excited stators are similar to permanent magnetic systems, except they operate with an electromagnet instead of permanent magnets.
