Why is my Toyota RAV4 door lock not working?

Remote door lock stopped working and our spare key that never gets used would not work either. Dealer said it was the key battery and replaced it. Seems to work fine now, but suprised batteries died so quickly, even in key that was never used. Still using original battery in my 10 year old Honda.
