Why are my battery terminals getting hot?
The biggest reason a battery terminal or connection would get hot is the connection is loose. That along with the high amount of power it is using to try and start will make it get very hot. The terminals on a lead acid battery can even melt from the heat. So wait between times.
What would cause a positive battery terminal to melt?
Terminal Connections Old, frayed cable ends may have exposed wires, which will cause arcing to other metal parts, resulting in a melted battery terminal.
Are car batteries supposed to get hot?
A working car battery will get warm after normal driving, due to engine heat and carrying a charge load. If your battery gets very hot, though, it may indicate that your charging system has some problems. A faulty alternator can also cause the battery to heat up as well.
Why would battery cables smoke?
Smoke is usually a sign of a loose connection. I agree either a loose or very corroded connection making a poor contact causing excessive resistance. Resistance causes heat. A bad cable can cause this condition too.
What causes battery to melt?
The number one cause of this issue is due to loose or corroded connections. This looseness or corrosion causes resistance and a byproduct of electrical resistance is heat, which leads to melting. Often beside the connection portion of the post is a nice flat pad of lead which connects down into the battery plates.

Why do car battery terminals get hot when trying to start my car?
It is usually caused by a loose battery terminal, which becomes more severe when there is an oxidized or corroded terminal involved, which in turn creates a higher resistance to current flow and hence heat generated.
