When was the Byker bypass built?
Erskine’s Plan of Intent was adopted by the Council in 1970 and the project was completed in 1982. The Byker Estate covers an area of approximately 200 acres and is home to around 9,500 people.
How did Byker get its name?
Byker: Translates as a village next to a marsh (kerr) in old Norse. The emerging village was named after the Wrekendyke Roman road which ran from South Shields to Chester-le-Street across the old High Fell.

How did scotswood get its name?
The Romans built a stone-walled fort in 150 to protect the river crossing which was at the foot of the Tyne Gorge, and this took the name of the bridge so that the whole settlement was known as Pons Aelius.
Is Byker Grove a real place?
Byker Grove was not filmed in the Byker area of Newcastle. The actual youth club set was in Benwell, which is in the west area of the city, Byker being in the east. This is the real youth club for the children of Byker. The final series started on 7 October 2006 on the CBBC Channel.
When was the Byker building in Newcastle built?
Byker Buildings was a street of tenement housing with the Cumberland Arms at the western end. The northwestern part of the street was built by 1858, the southwestern side after 1883. These were two-storey tenements for four families, with basements to the rear providing communal washhouse, privy and coal store.
