When do I need to adjust my valve clearance?
If the valve clearances fall within the manufacturer’s recommended range, no further work is required; however, if the clearances are outside of the specifications, determining what adjustments need to be made is the next step.
How often do you change the valve on a triumph?
The Triumph’s shop manual says to check the valve clearances every 12,000 miles, but the Honda’s says every 8,000. They both use shims to set the clearance, and they’re both low-revving air-cooled engines. So why the different adjustment intervals? A friend with a Honda Gold Wing says his valves don’t need to be checked until 32,000 miles.
When do you switch to an adjustable valvetrain?
If we switch to solid lifters it is mandatory that we convert to an adjustable valvetrain (I would also say that converting to adjustable valvetrain is mandatory in ALL racing applications as well as any application where we want to have accurate control of our valve lash setting). Not doing so is asking for serious problems!
What should the valve clearance be on a VW?
So with the advent of the 1600cc engine which produces more heat (resulting is hotter running valves), VW started recommending 0.006″ for a bit more leeway for the valves. You can still use 0.004″ in those engines too though, so long as the clearances are checked regularly.

How often do you change the valve on a Triumph Bonneville?
I have two bikes, a Triumph Bonneville and a Honda CB1100. The Triumph’s shop manual says to check the valve clearances every 12,000 miles, but the Honda’s says every 8,000. They both use shims to set the clearance, and they’re both low-revving air-cooled engines.
What should the clearance be on a valve?
A stepped “go/no-go” feeler gauge speeds things along: If the workshop manual (and you should have one) says clearance should be 0.007 inch, grab that gauge, plus a 0.006 and an 0.008. If the six-thousandth feeler slides into the gap but the eight-thou doesn’t, you’re good. If not, loosen the lock nut, adjust the gap, tighten, and recheck.
