What would cause rear differential to leak?
Rear Differential Leak – more commonly, the problems stem from low rear differential oil. Rear differential leaks are the culprit, either at the axle seals, the pinion seal (where the driveshaft attaches), or the rear differential cover.
Where does oil leak from rear end differential?
Puddles or small drips of rear end lubricants on the ground: If the gasket leak is significant, oil will leak from the differential and can drip onto the ground. In most cases, the differential in the rear end will drip rear end oil in the center of the vehicle; where the housing is typically located.
What happens when a gasket on a differential fails?
Over time, the gasket will continue to fail in multiple spots or the oil will leak and coat the entire differential housing. Puddles or small drips of rear end lubricants on the ground: If the gasket leak is significant, oil will leak from the differential and can drip onto the ground.

Which is darker front or rear differential fluid?
The rear differential fluid was notably darker than the front fluid. While the oil is draining, clean up the magnet on the drain plug, and put the gasket back on. If you replaced the front differential fluid (AWD owners) now would be a good time to clean the oil syringe/pump.

What to do if rear differential seal goes bad?
It’s not super difficult but you need to unbutton the wheel, brakes (ebrake as well), axle and then pop it out. Pull seal out and button back up. I was surprised that the seal went bad under 100k miles but if its leaking you want it fixed soon before you get debris in there or blow up your rear diff and possibly lock the rear tires.
