Fermentation is the process by which grape “must” (a fancy winemaking term for unfermented grapes or juice) transforms into wine. During fermentation, yeast—our microbiological friends—convert grape sugars into alcohol. There’s a lot more than just alcohol production going on, though.
Is wine technically grape juice?
Wine is an alcoholic beverage made with the fermented juice of grapes. Technically, any fruit is capable of being used for wine (i.e., apples, cranberries, plums, etc.), but if it just says “wine” on the label, then it’s made with grapes.
Can 100% grape juice turn into wine?
Answer: Yes, you can. But you will need to increase the sugar addition from 500g up to a maximum of 750g. To keep a wine-like quality, it is best to use grape juice for at least half of the total quantity.
Why is there no grape juice in wine?
The wine has yeast and goes through a fermentation process in order to become alcoholic. Through this, sugar mixes with yeast and bacteria in order to create alcohol. Grape juice has a much higher sugar content, with wines sugar content being between 0.7% and 2%.

Can Welch’s grape juice turn into wine?
Making wine from grape juice is done by the process of fermentation where yeast digest the sugars in the grape juice giving off two byproducts of the reaction: alcohol and bubbles of carbon dioxide. Welch’s grape juice can make a wonderful homemade wine that can be served as an everyday table wine.
What’s the difference between grape juice and grape wine?
The difference between grape juice and wine is the presence of yeast. Though one may naturally assume the juice is the more “natural” of the two, it’s actually wine that naturally occurs. Wines do get better with age, but most wines will taste best within a year of production.
Is wine just old grape juice?
It is the sugar in the grape juice that changes to alcohol. So most naturally occurring fluids that contain sugar, can be used to create wine. But the wine stage is just a temporary stop, the next change for grape, juice is vinegar.
Can you ferment Welch’s grape juice?
All of Welch’s products are fine for fermentation. If you prefer, you can use Welch’s Frozen Concentrate, you can do that as well. Just reconstitute the Welch’s concentrate with water as the directions from Welch’s indicate, and start from there.
Can kids drink wine?
It provides absolutely no benefit to the child and it can be quite harmful. While a few small sips of wine may not seem like much for a 170 lb. adult, that amount can have significant effects in a 28 lb. two-year-old.
