What should I do if I have a problem with my instrument panel?
Anytime I work on a vehicle, the first thing I do is disconnect the battery. The easiest way is by removing the negative terminal – the black one that connects the battery to the car chassis. This is where the battery terminal wrench comes in handy, but if you don’t have one a pair of pliers, a wrench, or 1/4″ socket should work fine.
What happens when you move the shifter out of Park?
When you move the shifter lever out of park, the Park Detect switch interrupts the ground circuit, indicating the shifter lever is no longer in park. Diagnosing the Park Detect system is pretty straightforward.

The retainer clips which secure the instrument cluster trim panel to its assembly need to be removed with the help of a flat bladed plastic trim tool. The same tool can be used to unfasten the retainer tabs which keep the instrument cluster trim panel close attached to the upper steering column cover. There are four fasteners which need removing.
