What kind of oil does A G80 use?
The G80 and a LS Diff are 2 completely different animals. The G80 uses Any 75W90 oil with no Additives. A LS diff has to have the additive in it for the clutch packs to function properly. The G80 is a Mechanically Locking Differential that engages when one wheels spins at a certain RPM mechanically locking the differential together.
Is it OK to use G80 on rear axle?
The use of any additive in locking rear axles (G80) is not recommended. Rear axle additives are designed for use in limited slip differentials which are normally installed in cars.
Is the Silverado G80 a centrifugal locker?
Granted it’s not as bad in your axle versus the 10 bolt. But the G80 is a centrifugal locker. It has fly weights that come out and engage it. It shock loads itself every time it locks. It’s very hard on the locker and diff. This is why it doesn’t do well at all for hardcore off road and burnouts.
Is the Eaton Gov-Loc a limited slip?
Note that the Eaton Gov-Loc is NOT a limited slip; the information in the above paragraph does not apply to the Eaton unit used by GM for the trucks! Some light duty trucks equipped with locking rear axles (G80) may exhibit rear axle chatter, especially when turning a corner from a stop.
Why does the Eaton G80 have a locking differential?
If you insist on going technical, we’re much obliged to tell you that the Eaton G80 performs like an open diff until excessive slip in one wheel triggers the locking mechanism. With both rear wheels rotating at the same speed, this provides better traction than a conventional limited-slip differential.

Which is better G80 or limited slip differential?
With both rear wheels rotating at the same speed, this provides better traction than a conventional limited-slip differential. Unlike high-tech electronic lockers, the G80 differential detects wheel slip through some flyweight-type governor.
