For the system to work correctly, it must be self contained–sealed because it uses pressure to function properly. The pressure keeps the coolant from reaching a boiling point as quickly. As the temperature increases the coolant becomes steam. Without a radiator cap, the liquid overflows.

The radiator did not get hot though. After several minutes the temp gauge indicated a steady decrease in temp down to about 170 and then back up to about 240 and after several minutes the temp came back down to approx 200 and stayed there.
Is the radiator on my Dodge Dakota working?
So far, since replacing lost coolant and getting a new radiator cap, my Dakota hasn’t overheated again and I’ve driven it several hundred miles since then. I hope it remains so, because since my wife’s 89 Jeep Cherokee failed inspection due to having a badly rusted out floor board, the Dakota is our only vehicle.
