What happens if you touch a battery cable?
Dangers Sparks from the battery cables present some dangers. The battery is filled with explosive gases. The spark could potentially light the gases, and the battery could explode. Also, anyone touching the cables could get shocked from touching them.
What happens when I attach the negative battery cable to…?
If you connect the negative first, then the positive, if you happen to touch the wrench to something metal while it is touching the positive terminal, that’s a short – because the chassis is already connected to the negative battery terminal. Best case, there will be a very big, very bright spark followed by substantial swearing.
What are the symptoms of a bad or failing battery cable?
No power to vehicle. Another common symptom commonly associated with bad or failing battery cables is no power to the vehicle at all. If the cables become split or corroded to the point where they are not making a clean connection with the battery, then the vehicle will not receive any power.
Where do you hook up the battery cable?
When attaching the battery cables, place the positive cable on first and then the ground cable. Do not allow the cables to touch on the free end not yet hooked into another battery while the cables are connected to the first battery. Also, the ground, or negative cable, should not be touching anything metal while the positive cable is hooked up.
Why does my positive battery cable spark when I try to?
I first thought the battery was the problem because it was dead. I recharged it twice with it starting. The next time it would not turn over. I changed the starter and I believe my friend crossed the wires causeing it to spark when the cables were attached. either that or I have a ground some where.
What happens if you connect a jumper cable to a dead battery?
Connecting the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery can create sparks and potentially cause an explosion. You should never attempt to jumpstart a frozen battery, as doing so can cause it to explode. Remove the dead battery, bring it inside, and allow it to thaw before attempting to jumpstart the vehicle.
What should I do if my battery cable is sparking?
unplug the alt cable end and the cable going to the starter and then briefly touch the battery terminals to the battery to see if it sparks (the spark implies that there is a draw somewhere). if no spark, then you’re draw is within something attached to either the starter/starter circuit or the alternator/alternator circuit.
