What does a rectifier on a boat do?
The regulator rectifier is in charge of not only regulating the voltage produced by the alternator or stator, but it also rectifies the voltage by converting the AC power to the appropriate amount of DC power.
Can a rectifier overheat?
Depending on where your bike’s regulator rectifier is located, the part can overheat. When it overheats, the component could fail fast. Things like poor grounding, a loose or weak battery, and a worn battery connection can all lead to regulator rectifier failure.
Is it normal for a rectifier regulator to get hot?
Rode to and from work (about 100kms) and didn’t notice anything with performance. But when I got home I smelled it again, and then noticed the reg/rect was pretty hot to the touch and thought it might be what was smelling. Is this supposed to get hot (or can someone check theirs after a ride for me).
Is it normal for a bike regulator to get hot?
Regulator/rectifier getting hot, is this normal? I might be being slightly paranoid since I now have heated grips, GPS, and 12volt outlet wired to a fuse block. In any case today, after installing the GPS hardwire last night, I could swear my bike smells like burning rubber a bit.

What causes a regulator rectifier to run hot?
To have voltage, the battery needs to have a reliable ground connection. If the link is bad and the voltage is faulty, this can cause the regulator rectifier to run hotter than usual. Things like poor grounding, a loose or weak battery, and a worn battery connection can all lead to regulator rectifier failure. Key Signs to Look For
