What causes the Mazda Protege engine to overheat?

In summary: Although not 100% correlated, going faster than 55mph seems to trigger the engine overheating, at which point the rattling noise appears and the coolant begins to bubble its way back up the reservoir (like it’s boiling?!).

How does the thermostat work on a Mazda Protege?

The Thermostat controls the flow of coolant through the engine and the radiator. The temp gauge reads the temp of the coolant. WHen you get no heat OR get no reading on the temp gauge…this means that you have an air pocket surrounding the temp gauge sensor…i.e. it will be in air…instead of submerged in coolant.

What kind of car is a Mazda Protege?

I drive a 2002 Mazda Protege and it’s been great to me until this past weekend. I had a 4.5-5 hour trip ahead of me and Google Maps told me a more direct route (i.e. not using the interstates) would save time. It must have erroneously assumed that the highway comprising basically the entire trip would be speed limit 55-65 the entire way.

What does a Mazda Protege engine sound like?

From inside the car it sounds almost like an animal skittering around in the chassis – irregular, short and clipped. With the hood up and an ear to the engine, it sounds like a piece of plastic fluttering in the wind, but with a faint electric “crackling” quality. Soon thereafter the check-engine light illuminates.

I have a 2005 Mazda 3i 2.0L 5 speed manual. I bought it back in April with 92,000 miles and it now has 110,000 miles. It has a catback straight pipe exhaust and the previous owner said the engine was swapped, due to a timing chain failure on the previous one.

Is the thermostat on my new car overheating?

I got a new radiator, which stopped the leaking, but the car was still overheating so then we tried replacing the thermostat but it is overheating even now. I spent my entire check on getting those things fixed, what now? I just got paid again but don’t have much to spare towards getting it fixed, so I need to make it count.
