Is there a knock sensor on my Subaru Forester?
High octane fuel and over the counter additives won’t do it if the carbon is really built up. Seafoam might though (from everything I keep hearing about it). Since the car is responding differently to the octane level of the fuel, you may have some issue with the knock sensor. Subarus have been noted for overly sensitive knock sensors.
