Should a fuel pump relay get warm?
Do fuel pump relays get hot? No. A relay operates by creating a magnetic field as current passes through a wire coil winding.
What causes a fuel pump relay to get hot?
The most likely cause of an overheating relay would be a fuel pump relay getting hot from a fuel pump drawing too many amperes. You should have the vehicle checked to see exactly what relay is overheating and if it is the fuel pump relay then replace the fuel pump and relay to fix the problem.
Where do you find the fuel pump relay?
When you shut off the ignition, it powers down the fuel pump. In most vehicles, the fuel pump relay can often be found in the fuse box in the engine bay, which is usually a long black box which contains fuel pump relay along with various other fuses and relays.
What happens when the fuel pump relay goes bad?
If the fuel pump relay suddenly fails, it will light up the check engine light and store a trouble code on the fuel pressure. The fuel pump relay going bad can affect the fuel pump’s power and affect fuel delivery to the engine.
Where is the fuel pump fuse box located?
The engine’s or the dashboard fuse box is usually a long black box containing a fuel pump relay and various other fuses and relays. For different vehicles, the fuel pump relays can be located in different places.
Why does the fuel pump relay need to be Tip Top?
The fuel pump relay needs to function in tip-top condition if the engine is expected to run without any issues. Therefore, any compromise in the fuel pump relay can directly cause engine problems, such as the stalling of the engine.
Why is my fuel pump relay getting hot?
The strange part is it seems to get hot when I am driving the car on the road. All grounds and hot wires have been tested for resistance while the car is not running. Additionally, the 9.2 amps and the 12+ volts were verified when I had the car on a dyno three weeks ago. Anything else I need to check?

What should I do if my fuel pump gets hot?
Check the voltage at the pump connection while the pump is on and make sure you have at least 12 volts there. If that is ok then only thing I can think of is there must be another path that the current is taking. Did you measure the current at a point near the relay that included the total current paths from the relay?
