Is the XR 250L a good first bike?
The XR line are excellent first bikes. The 250L is dated and down on power, but it is a very capable bike and has a strong following. People have done some amazing rides on this bike. If you are looking to ride primarily off road, then the 250r might with a dualsport kit may be a better choice.
Why is my XR250L hard to start?
Just keep the oil changed, filter clean, and check the valves twice a year. XRs come jetted very lean from the factory. If one doesn’t start easy, that’s the usual problem. If it’s not that, it’s usually tight valves. A dirty air filter will also make them hard to start. If the valves get out of adjustment, you can foul a plug on occasion.

XR250L’s are not e-start, they are kick start only. On that note, they normally start very easily. The XR250L is not e-start. If you’re looking at a 250 with electrical start (and you’re in the USA) you’re looking at a NX250.
