Is the Vortec 454 in a 97 Silverado 3500?
I have a 97 silverado 3500 with the vortec 454 in it. It has 200k on it, and has a horrible low throttle input miss and a high idle at times. It is also way down on power and stumbles until you really give it some gas, but even then, you can tell its low on power.
What kind of engine does a Chevy 454 have?
The Chevy 454 first hit the market in the 1970s. The 454 is a big-block carbureted engine found in most older model Chevrolet cars and trucks. The engine uses eight cylinders to provide high-end torque and speeds. The combination of larger bore and eight cylinders equates to very poor gas mileage.
What should the idle RPM be on a Chevy 454 Eng?
You want the idle to be around 800 to 900 rpm with the vehicle in park and around 700 rpm with the vehicle in neutral. Monitor your tachometer while adjusting. Adjust the idle by sound if you do not have a tachometer. Listen for the engine rpm to drop until just before it starts to sputter.
How to increase gas mileage on a Chevy 454 Eng?
Routine maintenance and maintaining a low idle speed also increases performance and mileage. Maintain the proper tire pressure in your vehicle. Check the pressure and ensure that it is at factory specifications. Lower tire pressure creates higher drag that forces more fuel to be consumed. Check the tire pressure weekly.
How much horsepower does a 95 Chevy 454 get?
I have a 95 Chevy 3/4 ton 454 ext. cab. The specs on it put it at a wimpy 260 horse. I figure since it’s only getting 10mpg, I might as well bump it on up to the days when 454’s were getting 450 horse. What would it take to get some serious performance out of this thing… on a budget / shadetree mechanic type setup?
Do you need a good Cam for a 454?
A good cam. You don’t need anything nuts as a 454 in a truck is made to pull and haul. I’d consider higher lift if you choose to go with better heads. But a basic TQ/RV cam would be fine for now with mild lift as the heads can’t use the additional air flow.
How much power does a GMC 95 Chevy have?
Since the ’95 is a TBI motor, it’s really shitty stock… bad heads, bad cam, bad exhaust. Start with the cheap. Full tune up and slow down on the freeway to about 60-65mph. Run tires high air pressure, etc. Toss in a 180°F thermo also so you can bump the timing.
