Is tarlatan the same as cheesecloth?
The big difference with cheesecloth is the glue (starch) that is used for tarlatan. The tissue is therefore much stiffer and harder. The absorbent capacity of the tarlatan is just right to wipe the ink from the surface, but the starch prevents the ink being pulled out of the grooves.
