If you’re driving up the Pali Highway from town you can see two notches cut in the narrow ridgeline. The notches are man-made. They were created by warriors of ancient Oahu to house cannons when defending attacks from Nu’uanu Valley.

Named “Pali” meaning “cliff” in Hawaiian, the Pali Lookout is the site of the Battle of Nuuanu, where in 1795 King Kamehameha I won the struggle that finally united Oahu under his rule. This fierce battle claimed hundreds of soldiers’ lives, many of which were forced off of the Pali’s sheer cliffs.
When was Pali built?
Construction began in the mid-1950’s and the first tunnel was opened for one-way traffic in 1957. The second tunnel was completed in 1961 and the Pali Highway itself was officially dedicated in December of 1962.
