This happens when the brake pads get very hot which causes the pad material to rub off onto the brake rotors.

I know for a fact my rotors are warped – shimmy at front end when under extended heavy load (going down ski-hill for instance) I believe this happened when I was driving through some hills with my 6,000lb+ trailer and didn’t realize that my connection to the trailer came lose.
