How do you get a steering column in a front wheel drive car?
You may have to move the steering wheel to access the bolt. Sometimes this is outside, or inside the vehicle. On many front wheel drive cars with rack and pinion steering, this means dropping the engine cradle 4 inches (10.2 cm) to access it. You may have to peel back a rubber boot to access this as well.

How is a steering column measured in Ididit?
ididit measures a steering column from the top edge of the column housing (1)down to the bottom of the output shaft (2) on all columns EXCEPT for our Tilt/Telescoping columns. Tilt/Telescoping columns are measured from the top edge of the column adapter down to the end of the output shaft when the column is in a fully collapsed position.

Do you need a dash mount for a steering column?
The steering column must be supported at the dash with a dash mount and supported where it protrudes through the firewall with a floor mount. (Figure 1)It is vital that the steering column is tight and secure. Attaching your column to a steering gearbox or rack & pinion system may require some combination of u-joints, couplers and shafts.
How does the steering column turn the wheel?
While turning the steering wheel, the column twists the pinion that moves along the grooves. This action pulls the rack to one side, thereby turning the wheels of the automobile. In a recirculating ball steering, the steering column links the steering wheel and the recirculating ball gearbox.
