How does the coolant level sensor work?
The coolant level sensor works with a float that contains a ring magnet. The ring magnet closes the reed switch inside when there is enough coolant in the radiator. Once the coolant drops to a certain level, the float follows the level, the reed switch is removed from the magnet, and contracts the reed switch open.
When does the low coolant level warning light go out?
When you start the engine, the low coolant level light should come on for a second or two and then go out. If it doesn’t go out, either the coolant level is too low or there is a problem with the sensor system.
Where is the low coolant sensor on my truck?
Maybe 6 or 8 inches down from the top on either side as Freddyack stated. Low coolant light. My truck is a ’93 6.5 C2500 and the low coolant sensor is in the passenger side radiator tank. About a foot down from the top.
When to replace a car coolant light sensor?
If your car is older, the sensor has deteriorated with time and may be failing but not entirely failed. It is not a bad idea to keep an eye on your sensor’s readings. Replacing a sensor that is starting to show extreme signs of age and wear can prevent future problems.
What happens if your coolant sensor goes bad?
A bad coolant sensor may cause a decrease in fuel efficiency or it may also cause the vehicle to fail your emissions inspection. It is likely that the problem may be a loose, corroded, or faulty connection and not a problem with the sensor itself.
How does the low coolant warning light work?
If the level falls below a critical amount of coolant in the radiator or expansion tank (attached to the radiator via a hose or pipe), the sensor sends a signal to the vehicle’s onboard monitoring system which then turns on the low coolant warning light on the instrument panel in order to alert you of the issue.
What should I do if my coolant level sensor is full?
Check the coolant temperature sensor, and the coolant level sensor and make sure that they are plugged in. Remove the harness to them and check the sensor for resistance. For the level sensor, if the coolant is full, there should be no resistance as the sensor is in a closed loop.
What happens if your coolant level is too low?
Depending on where your coolant is leaking from, it could get mixed in with your engine oil or get burned with the air and fuel. Both of these scenarios can have lasting and devastating effects on your engine, not to mention the risk of overheating if the coolant level gets too low for long enough.
Why does my radiator coolant light keep flashing?
Coolant is full. Manual says if car was overheating the light would stay on not flash. The radiator fuse is fine the belt driving the water pump is fine. I don’t know how to check the water pump itself.
