Why is my crank sensor not working on my Harley?
Like I said before, if you are getting a voltage reading when crank over the engine , about 1 -2 volt pluses, then the sensor has to have continuity. The backfiring you describe doesn’t sound like a crank sensor. Usually when bad, the bike wont accelerate, dies spits and pops, dies won’t run hardly at all if off idle.
What to do if your Harley won’t start?
The Harley service manual suggests to check the electrical connections at the ECM and CKP, as well as check the resistance of the ignition coil before replacing the CKP sensor. That being said, a large number of Dyna owners who have had trouble starting their bikes reported that replacing the CKP sensor immediately cured the problem.

What to do if your Harley Davidson engine stalls?
Mist the intake flanges with brake cleaner. If your bike’s idle drops, or the engine stalls, you have an intake leak. If this is the case, replace the intake seals along with the front & rear intake flanges. If the bike passes the intake test; have the dealer or your mechanic scan the m/c for possible codes.
