The only way to open the rear hatch is to first unlock the driver’s side door, then hit the unlock all button, then walk back and open the rear hatch. It sure would have been nice if the rear hatch had a slot for the key, or there was a button on the remote you could press.

Why is the trunk not opening in my Subaru Outback?

Most likely cause. But I will say I find the hatch doesn’t go up very far even at full extension, after pushing it up by hand. I’m only 5-8 and fit under it without much room to spare.
