Do drum brakes need to be cleaned?
Cleaning and adjusting drum brakes is a necessary service. I’d recommend it on a yearly basis pending mileage. Disc brakes clean themselves hence the dusty wheels.

- Jack up the ATV.
- Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap.
- Clean the cap and rubber diaphragm thoroughly.
- Top of the brake fluid up to the maximum level mark.
- Pump the brake lever or foot pedal 3-4 times, depending on which brake system you are bleeding.
- Open the bleeder valve.

I also needed to clean out a lot of previous owner mud from the wheel side of the brake panel. The shaft that the brake arm is attached to was also dirty where it passes through the brake backing plate. Once cleaned up and greased, it was much easier.

Made this a sticky. great video but Ive got a 2004 honda recon and am stuck in the middle of trying to figure out how to separate the brake panel plate from the drum. they came off together when I tried to get the panel plate off. also the brake lever at the panel cover was nearly frozen and I could only move with mallet. thanks
Why are my rear brakes sticking on my Foreman 500?
My Foreman 500 has been having an issue of it’s rear brakes sticking almost like they are applied at all times. I will try this video info and see if that is the issue. Sometimes after it has sat for a week or so, you really have to give it the gas to get it rolling. Other times a lite throttle blip will release it.
