Can you repair a camshaft?
Camshafts can be rebuilt if they have lobe wear, as long as that wear is not excessive. Above you can see examples of both a rebuildable and non-rebuildable camshaft. The rebuildable camshaft has slight wear. You can see that the wear is not deep and just looks like the cam has been scratched.
What causes cam failure?
This can be caused by a lifter being out of position and striking the lobe, weak valve spring pressure, lack of oil pressure, or from stressful operating conditions like overspeeding. There are other types of damage a camshaft or its associated parts can incur besides just lobe wear.
How do you remove gears from an engine?
Rotate the engine until the marks line up as described in the manual. Step 2: Remove the timing gears. Remove the nuts or bolts that hold the gears to the camshaft. The bolt for the crankshaft gear was the same as the one holding the front pulley and was removed earlier.
What are the teeth of the camshaft gears?
The camshaft gear has 50 helical cut teeth, and rotates at half the engine speed. The crankshaft gear has 25 helical cut teeth and rotates at engine speed. The original Ford engine camshaft gear was a phenolic construction made up of laminations of fabric.
Where do you get the camshaft timing gear?
This style of gear was also produced in Canada at some point. For the ultimate gear-head, Bill Stipe produces this steel hub and billet aluminum camshaft gear, shown above, which is adjustable in order to vary the cam and valve timing relative to crankshaft and piston position.
Why are the gears on my camshaft not working?
The fabric and phenolic gears having the aluminum hub centers often fail at the interface of the gear to the hub, loosening up and producing a knocking noise when running. In the extreme case, the fabric gear can separate from the metal hub. Pictured above is a replacement crankshaft gear.
