When the belt stretches, it can begin to slip, if left unattended. Not all types of drive belt systems can be adjusted. Cars equipped with an automatic belt tensioner adjust themselves over time and do not require adjustment.

You want to be able to press down on the belt at a mid point between two pulleys and only be able to move it downward about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. When you have the alternator in the right position, have an assistant tighten the top bolt and nut to lock the alternator in.

Its easiest to refit the belt round the bottom pulleys first, and then finish by sliding it onto the tensioner pulley (which has no ribs or shoulder) last. Note: Once in place, nip up the bottom bolt on the tensioner spring, they tend to be loose when you get them which is easier for fitting but it should be tightened in place once the belt is on)
Why did my alternator snap on my Renault Clio?
The reason for this was the alternator belt had snapped after the car sat for 8 months the alternator seized, and when first started the belt simply snapped.

How often should I Change my aux belt?
The Aux belt should be changed every 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, so if your car does 36K in a year its due after 1 year, or if it does 2K miles a year its due after 3 years.
