I’m not sure you can get a lead acid 12v battery to stay at 17-18 volts no matter what you did to it. If your charger is working fine on your bike it’s probably OK. If your buddies battery has a bad cell or other problem your charger may be trying too hard to charge it.

Click to expand… do the above.. and while disconnected measure the voltage of the battery disconnected from the charger… again it should read somewhere in the range of 12 – 12.7 / .8 volts…. if not it may still be a charger problem, I ma nots ure of the design on yoru bike but there may be a coltage regulator that is faulty….
