In 2000 it became mandatory all cars 2001 and up have an emergency release handle inside in case someone gets locked in the trunk. Until the latch fails theres no way to know if it will still work (possible extra mechanism?) but you could tie a rope to it and run that into the cabin and tuck it beside the back seat.
