Because the PC was clogged the FP was not receiving enough fuel to stay running so it would bog down ( fuel starved). As it sat for 15 minutes the PC would drip enough fuel into the FP to start and ride for a minute until it used up the fuel. The getting hot part was just how long it took to use up the fuel in the fuel pump.

Boiled the carb in lemon juice yesterday which worked as advertised. Really amazing. After that and a spray down with carb cleaner and compressed air, new carb kit and an inline fuel filter installed, my 97 started like a champ.
Why does my car die when I Turn on the gas?
When you turn the gas on and start it up, the carb’s bowl is filled with gas. When it is running, that gas in the bowl is burned up but there is something stopping the fuel from coming in fast enough to keep the bowl filled causing it to die.
