What does it mean when your electric bike stops working?

After I stopped for a minute, the bike seemed to be working normally again, but about a mile later on a very slight uphill that would not normally strain the battery at all , there was a small jolt and then no motor or power or anything. I stopped and turning the throttle got no response at all. The bike seemed totally dead.
