Why does my Jeep Wrangler idle all the time?
One more part that can cause a bad idle is the Throttle Position Sensor. My TPS went bad and my idle and acceleration became unbelievably erratic. Try cycling the TPS via the throttle linkage 40-50 times (without the engine running) to see if anything changes.

Jeep Cj-7’s and early wrangler YJ’s with 4.2 liter engines came with a rather lowsy carter bbd carburetor which of goes out fo adjustment. One of the most common problems with this carburetor is an erratic idle; in extreme cases (as it was with my jeep) the vehicle will stall every time you slow down or stop.

When you start it up it revs to 2500 rpms and starts to go higher ,it won’t idle down. Vehicle continues to accelerate for a few seconds after letting off gas pedal. Checked the connection at the throttle and the cable/throttle body is not sticking.

It will start to do this when in gear running down the street and it is noticeable to the peddle. When you take your foot off the peddle the idle accelerates to 3000 rpm and you can’t shift…. I replaced the throttle positioning censor twice already, and it still does it.

The car idles and drives perfectly at slower speeds but on the highway you can really feel the pulses and hear the exact making sounds. The only way to get the pulsing to stop is to give the jeep more gas. It sounds to me like its a missfire somewhere along the engine due to the fact that the exhaust is making sounds from the pulsing.

MY PROBLEM IS THAT THE JEEP CRANKS OVER BUT TAkes a long time to start, sometimes i have to press on the gas pedal to get it to start, It is a 91 wrangler with the ho 4 liter haven’t found the problem yet anyone have any idea’s how to fix this ? my thought was cps ???? Still having this problem….
