Why does my engine rev for no reason?
It sounds like you may have a dirty or failing idle air control valve. When the engine RPM drops below the normal range of about ~800 RPM, this often times will cause the engine to stall indicating a dirty or faulty idle air control valve.
What causes high rev?
If the computerized engine control system is faulty, high idling can be one symptom. A vacuum leak in any of the hoses can be the culprit—inspect them all for leaks. A bad idle-speed control unit can cause the problem; it may need to be replaced. A faulty alternator can fast idle issues; if so, replace it.

Is there a problem with my VW Beetle?
Getting it towed to dealer in AM and letting them have a go at it. The problem I am seeing is a little different than some of the replies (although we are all in same srewy boat). The car will start for a couple seconds (about 2) then die, prssing accelerator when startign starts to rev it when it starts then dies.
