I had that problem and, upon removal of the HVAC assembly, noticed that there was a stick wedged into the cable system. Must have fallen through the dash or something… Mine is the same way. the switch is stuck in the vent/feet position and won’t turn at all.

How does the climate system control the defroster?
The climate system is responsible for controlling the position of the defroster actuator which is connected to the air position door in the heater plenum. This actuator controls defrost, middle and lower air vents. When it fails it can do so in the defrost position and must be replaced.

What to do if your Jeep Liberty blows out the vents?
Working upwards towards the center inspect the electrical connector and wire harness to the actuator for any loose, broken or damaged wires. If no problems are found, remove the actuator and turn the door pin by hand. The air flow should now change output zones. If yes, replace the actuator.
