Why are so many regulator and stator failures?
1st.Why such common failures.I believe problem is caused by stators thin low grade wires and the connection plug to regulator.Plug is poorly designed and any moisture, wire heating causes the plug to melt thus shorting the stator. It does not help that old style regulators produce lot of heat which contribute to melting.
How to do static test on motorsport stator?
To perform a static test on your motorcycle or motorsport vehicle stator: Ensure that your multimeter device is set to ohms and that you know your stator’s target readings. Pull the negative and positive leads apart and check that the multimeter display reads OL for an open loop.
When do you need to replace a stator on a motorcycle?
Generally speaking, you don’t need to replace a stator if your motorcycle or motorsport machine is still running smoothly. Stators have unpredictable lifespans, and the timing of replacements isn’t always dependent on the stator’s age, so there’s no reason to replace one that may very well run for several thousand more miles if left untouched.
How can I tell if my stator is bad?
The only way to know if it’s your stator is to test the stator itself. Luckily, testing is simple. Even those who aren’t mechanically inclined can test their stator by referring to their service manual and following the steps outlined above. So if you aren’t sure, do the test.

What to do if you have a bad stator?
Without a good stator, your engine will run poorly or not at all. This solution completely bypasses the stator by using a 12 volt battery to power the ignition system. Everything required can be purchased for under $50. It will work on all contact breaker point engines (old style), and some electronic controlled ignition (newer style) ones.
What do you need to know about rectifiers and stators?
Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/source/cruis… Stators create power in AC, the Rectifier converts AC power to DC power, and the Regulator regulates the proper amount of power to the battery. What happens to the spark plug when a stator goes bad?
The stator coil generates the power for the spark plug and other accessories on small engines Without a stator there would be no spark at all, meaning the engine won’t run. While a stator is dying, it can produce a weak spark, causing the engine to miss or run poorly.
Why is the battery on my stator not working?
The stator itself might be dead and is not sending any current to the battery. Or the problem might be on the other side of the circuit: you may have too many accessories draining the battery faster than the stator can charge it.
Can a motorcycle stator be replaced at home?
A stator replacement can certainly be accomplished at home with basic tools, but an inexperienced mechanic, or sloppy installation procedures can lead to damaging the stator’s wire or insulation. Even a small scratch in the insulation can be enough to quickly cause a short in the windings as the wire heats up from use.
When did the 5th generation stator discussion start?
Discussion in ‘ 5th Generation 1998-2001 ‘ started by Rubo, Jul 7, 2012 . I decided to post everything related to stator and regulator failures and solutions.
