Where is the transfer case on a BMW?
The brake, ABS, and 4×4 warning lights all come on at the same time (see title photo above) There is an very audible rapid clicking noise that comes from the transfer case (approximately under the driver’s seat underneath the car) just after the engine is turned off.
What is transfer case actuator?
The transfer case actuator motor is a small motor that is bolted on to the transfer case and can be removed and replaced (or repaired with a new internal gear). If you DO NOT hear the clicking described the cause could be something else (not covered in this article).
Why is my transfer case making a noise?
The noise should only last about 1-2 seconds, see the video included here for an example of the sound. If you have both of these symptoms then the culprit is very likely to be a stripped gear inside the transfer case motor.

What makes up the transfer case on a NP203?
1. The transfer case is made up of 4 sections bolted together, a range box (the gear reduction we use for the Doubler kit), the chain case which houses the chain drive to the front driveshaft output, the differential housing, and the output housing. The front 2 sections are cast iron, the back 2 sections are typically aluminum.
Is the transfer case a cast iron or aluminum?
The transfer case is one piece of cast iron. There is a short bearing retainer/output housing at the tail of the case, and aluminum bearing retainers/seal retainers at the front and rear outputs but the working parts are all in a single iron housing. 2. There is a small idler shaft cover on the back of the 205 with 3 small bolts holding it on.

When to replace transfer case fluid in BMW E90?
If you’re unsure of the last service, replace the fluid as soon as possible. Doing so will extend the life of your transmission. The only catch with servicing this fluid is you have to reset the transfer case control module adaptations each time you replace it.
Can you change the fluid in a BMW 328xi?
The fluid change described in this article was performed on a 2007 BMW 328xi. On E90-E93 models the procedure is much more involved than it was on the previous E46 chassis. In order to change the fluid the exhaust system and the heat-shields have to be completely removed.
