Where is the heated oxygen sensor Bank 1?
Hi, after changing both my heated oxygen sensors (bank 1) which was code P0037, that has gone now. Now its P1646 and says “Heated oxygen sensor control module” (bank 1). I can find the Engine Control Module on the circuit diagram but no “Heated oxygen sensor control module”.
What is the fault code for oxygen sensor?
We recommend Torque Pro. OBD II fault code P0136 is defined as “Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 2)”, and is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects a voltage or signal from or to the #2-oxygen sensor that does not fall within predefined specifications.
How is the temperature of an oxygen sensor controlled?
The sensor is heated to about 1,200 degrees F (650 degrees C), double the temperature of a basic heated oxygen sensor. Sensor heaters can draw a lot of current, so battery voltage is usually supplied directly to the heaters through a relay and a fuse. The heaters’ ground circuit is controlled by the PCM.
How does a heated oxygen sensor work in a PCM?
These sensors contain a heating element that brings the sensor to operating temperature faster. This allows the PCM to use the signals input sooner, for more precise fuel control and reduced emissions. The heater circuit is energized through a relay that closes when the engine is cranked.

Where is the oxygen sensor in the PCM?
The PCM constantly looks for out-of-the-ordinary voltages or current draw in the heater circuits. The oxygen sensor 2 unit sits on the same side as the engine’s cylinder 1. It measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gases after the catalytic converter cleans their emissions.
What to do if your heater has an oxygen sensor?
Check the sensor and its wiring harness for visible signs of damage that can cause short circuits. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and ensure that the right amount of ground is present. You can also inspect the heater control ground circuit for damage. Connect an ohmmeter to the heater element and run a resistance test.
