Where are the holes in the intake manifold on a Saturn?
Kill the engine on the Saturn and pop the hood. On the side of the engine you can see a metal strip with several large, circular holes. This is the gasket of your intake manifold. Spray the penetrating oil on the bolts of the manifold gasket to help clear off debris and other gunk from the bolts. Place your 12mm open wrench on the bolt.
When do you need to replace the gasket on a Saturn?
The gasket on the exterior of the manifold helps seal off any leaks running from the manifold itself. If the gasket is ever cracked or damaged you will need to replace it, as it may otherwise start leaking fuel and other liquids from your Saturn. Kill the engine on the Saturn and pop the hood.
Where does the fuel line go in a Saturn’s / 1?
On vehicles that use a fuel injection system — including the Saturn S/1 SOHC — the fuel line runs into the engine via an intake manifold. The gasket on the exterior of the manifold helps seal off any leaks running from the manifold itself.
When does a Saturn’s series engine fail?
The aftermarket replacements have a quality problem; best bet is to find a low mileage junkyard replacement or order the OE part (~$70). Not hugely common, but still a recurring failure. They usually fail when the engine is hot. You’ll be driving along, and suddenly the engine dies, and won’t restart until it cools.

What kind of spark plugs do Saturn’s series use?
Most copper plugs fit this description. Narrow fine wire electrodes almost always cause problems, usually a p0300 and running like the car needs new plugs. The easiest thing to do here is just use the OE spark plugs, they’re inexpensive and just work. NGK BKR5ESA-11 (DOHC) and BKR4ESA-11 (SOHC). These have a higher than normal failure rate.
Why does my Saturn’s have a toaster head?
Some people run a 60-40 antifreeze-water mix as a preventative measure. The key symptom is massive oil contamination in the coolant, to the point where it has the consistency of a chocolate milkshake. The head is toast and the coolant system will need to be flushed thoroughly. This is only a problem with the SOHC engine.

Why is there no torque on my exhaust manifold?
This is because quite often these nuts/studs etc just jam-up against each other, meaning that they will torque up OK, but they are only tightening against themselves without actually putting any extra pressure on the manifold to seal it. New studs & nuts overcome this problem.
