When did the tailgate latch on my Mercedes Benz stop working?

On a vacation trip Jan 2013, my tailgate latch stopped working. It would close, but not latch. Brought it to MB of S. Orlando, FL. They replaced the latch, and said the replacement part is an improved one over the original. It cost $600 (parts 340, labor 218, and tax). It took about an hour.

Well after reading Hawkeye’s comment & reading the manual, I can confirm that I can open the tailgate with the key fob & with the driver door button, and can close it with the button in the tailgate & (with ignition on) the driver door button. What to do if your tailgate is not latching?

The outside of the tailgate has those little plastic pieces like mentioned before….I just used some wd-40, moved those plastic pieces back into place with a regular screw driver and works fine now. A quick shot of WD ever few months helps. Thanks for all the replies, I will look at it tonight and lubed it up good and see how it goes.

Yes, there is a connection, I have seen a jump start blow out the setting in the liftgate module or sometimes even damage the lift gate module. I see. When the battery went dead, I didn’t have to reset the radio stations upon recharging it so it didn’t kill that type of thing.
