Why was the line from Hellingly to boilerhouse closed?
The line led from the Hellingly Station to the boilerhouse and was used principally for transporting coal for the heating boilers and electricity plant. The line closed to passenger traffic in 1930 and the track was lifted in 1959 at which time the hospital boilers were converted from coal to oil fuel.
Why was the Electric Railway at Hellingly built?
Hellingly was unique at the time in that it had an electric railway, the only asylum in the county to have one. The line was constructed in 1899 for the purpose of supplying construction materials to the building works. The train never followed a set timetable, coming and going only when people needed to arrive or leave the hospital.
